We live in a world that is increasingly dependent on and inspired by information. Yet, access to journalistic opportunities remains to be a significant challenge for many young students. Despite the steady rise of digital media, when it comes to global journalism, Southeast Asia continues to struggle with underrepresentation.
Across the region, journalism education is facing challenges such as reduced interest, declining admissions, and limited access to courses that are tailored to empower the youth. These barriers often disproportionately affect the marginalized youth who are dissuaded from pursuing avenues in media literacy and creative expression due to systemic inequalities and financial constraints. Searching for avenues that uplift young people to share their perspectives on local issues is imperative in building more inclusive narratives and reflecting the diversity of different communities.
Empower Today was founded to thus bridge existing gaps and cheer young voices. By providing students from underserved backgrounds with helpful resources and training, the initiative aims to aid them as they break into the world of journalism and become active contributors to the dialogue and development of their communities.
